September- Tawthelin
Tawthelin:
Monsoon is thinning away and skies are getting clear. As the sun's rays steal
the drizzle, coloured rainbows are in the skies. We have had enough of the
torrential rains for over 3 months, now we long for days warm and dry with lots
of sunshine. There is romance in the air, as the ban on weddings is to be lifted
with the end of Lenten season, which is next month. Lovers who have been waiting
all these months are now busy with their wedding plans. The weather is fine and
the wide Ayeyarwaddy River spreads out like a roll of matting. This is a month
of boat races. Regattas of olden days were held under royal patronage.
At the forth week of September there is Phaung-Taw-Oo -a famous pagoda festival in Inle lake
for 18 days ceremony and the ceremony is ended with boat racing. Four Buddha
images of Phaung-Taw-Oo pagoda are placed on royal barge tugged ceremoniously
around lake from one village to another by leg-rowing boats.
Rice donating ceremony is held in Padamya pagoda of Sagaing around the mid of September, near
Mandalay. Sacks of rice donated from whole Country are offered to residing monks
and nuns of Mandalay and Sagaing hill. Nuns are presented on the day before full
moon and monks on full moon days.
