Day 1 Mandalay - Monywa

Depart for Monywa after breakfast. About 85 miles (136 km) to
the North-west of Mandalay. The town is the commercial centre
for Indian trade. Bodhi-ta-taung (one thousand Bo trees),
Thanbuddae Pagoda, Po-win taung Hills are interesting places to
be visited.
Monywa sightseeing is not completed with a visit to Thanbuddae
Pagoda, well-known for its architectural designs. The pagoda is
situated within 7 miles South East of Monywa, Sagaing Division
in Upper Myanmar-37 acres wide the square-shaped ground is
surrounded by walls. It is clean and pleasant although the place
is next to a dense mountain forest. Moe-Hnyin Sayadaw built the
pagoda in 1937.

The gate-way of the pagoda on each side of the gate-way you will
see two white elephants. In the compound of the pagoda, there
are two main religious buildings main shrine, and prayer hall.
In the main shrine, upper and lower satellite pagodas of
different sizes and shapes are built. And there are also many
satellite pagodas of all shape and sizes in the prayer hall. In
all there are 864 upper and lower satellite pagodas in the two
buildings. The strange thing about the pagoda is its flag-mast
built around the pagoda.
Buddhists build prayer-POSTs some like
flag-masts as commemorative and religious signs in pagodas
compounds. The flag-masts near Thanbuddae Pagoda are built on a
brick-foundation and at the top of the flag-masts there are
brick-spire like roof-Buddha-shaped flag-masts. It is a
systematic building style and it takes Lucidity. The descriptive
plays, floral designs and fruits offered to the Buddha or monks
are painted on the outer

brick-wall of the pagoda.
There are different sizes and pastures of Buddha images in the
main shrine, the standing images are placed at the corner and
the sitting images are on wide and open space. The pagodas are
placed according to its number on the brick wall so its building
style is not annoyed at the sight of somebody.
The holes where light rays can pass through made at the roof in
order to see the images with natural lights. The wind holes are
hidden by Abaya Pagoda to prevent the rough wind and to bring
smooth wind in the main shrine. The main shrine is composed of
four main rooms. Prayer hall is composed of (8) rooms in the
length and (4) rooms in the width. Although there are many
rooms, the

Buddha image in the back room can be seen from the
front room horizontally and the Buddha images at the side, laterally.
Thanbuddae Pagoda is interested in its architectural
designs and systematic painting and decoration with portraits
uncountable number of images can be seen at one place. So Thanbuddae Pagoda is a famous pagoda with uncountable number of
images.
